I was talking a year or so ago with the
coach of what might best be called a correctional
institution. Many of his kids have never played
football before, and the discipline of an organized sports
program is new and strange to most of them. But
for whatever reason, they turn out for his team.
Maybe for something to do. Since most of
them are there for 18 to 24 months' terms
(sentences?), I asked the coach what happens when
he loses a key player in mid-season
- not to injury, but to release. He told me
that never happens - they all extend their stay
- until football season is over!
