(LAST WEEK) GLASCOCK COUNTY 26, Stewart-Quitman 6. Coach John Bowen's report: "We had the school's first-ever season-opening win Friday night. We defeated Stewart-Quitman High 26-6. The Double-Wing was in punishing form. 48-307 with 4 tds rushing. The wedge was 18-106 with 3tds alone. Only had to throw 3 passes all night. ( hard to believe from an old Run & Shoot guy). Your Troubleshooting video provided us the edge we needed in executing our wedge. The play just demoralized the opposition. For a school that lost how many ever in a row, we have now won 2 of our last 7; we are on the right track-- we owe a lot to the Double-Wing system."

NASHVILLE Coach, I just wanted to let you know the Double-Wing is still up and running at Nashville. We are now 2 - 0 and are only playing 4 seniors. After the game the opposing coach said we knew the counter was coming, we just couldn't stop it. It was a big win for us against a big non-conference rival. Sorry I didn't make it to a clinic last spring it just didn't work out. Yours in football, Coach Reeder

RIDGEVIEW 12, El Paso 6 - Ridgeview now 2-0 under new coach Mike Benton: "I think we are for real down here in central Illinois. We defeated the #4 ranked team in class 1a tonight by a score of 12-6. El Paso had a 24 regular season game win streak coming in, but the double wing and our determined kids put an end to that. we were able to control the clock and the game the whole way and without a few mistakes would have dominated them completely. Our A back Chase Simpsen rushed for 162 yards on 26 carries, while our C back Derek Norton scored both TD'S on 11 carries for 51 yards. Overall we rushed for 273 yards on 53 carries while throwing the ball 4 times and completing two for 46 yards. Defensively we held El Paso to 17 yards rushing and 65 yards passing. We committed 10 penalties and fumbled a punt return, otherwise it was a shutout. Thanks for selling me on a great offense! I am more and more convinced every day!" Coach Mike Benton Ridgeview Mustangs, Colfax, Il
CALUMET 50, Lake Station 0 (Calumet, of Gary, now 3-0) Coach Ivan Zimmer: We are now 3-0 after winning Friday night 50-0. We could have broken the Cumberland College scoring record. However, I know there are kids and coaches on the other side of the field. Our freshman QB hit another Freshman with our first TD pass in three years! We have amassed 1229 yds rushing/8.97 per carry. 429.7 yds per game total offense. Our "star" has 43 carries for 655 yds (15.2 yds avg.), he also has 11 TDs, and 1 Pt conversion. Our other backs are averaging 4.8, 12.7, 8.0 and the FBs are averaging near 5.0. Our center is even averaging 9.0. How, he caught a fumble midair and ran an impressive 9 yds! (The thrill of a life time.)

ASSUMPTION 52, Davenport North 20. "Coach, Assumption is off on the right foot again this year, though we need to address some issues that will make us better in game 2. We defeated Davenport North 52-20. 491 yds of offense A back Travis guy 6 for 38, B back Joe Beaudry 15 for 212, and C back Otto Nobis 7 for 162. One of the best backs in the state Marques Simmons hit us up for 285 yds. He's for real! Beside the usual working, Coach Merv Habenicht, A retired coaching legend from our arch rival Bettendorf, has us using speed option from spread. We call it Spread 8 or 9 option. He has been a great addition to our staff. We like to say that it took 65 yrs for a good Catholic to finally get it right!"
FOREST CITY 22, Garner-Hayfield 8 Coach Jaason Sopko: "Good news from Forest City, IA. We won our home opener (22-6) and my debut game as head coach. It is the first time they have won an opener in over 6 years. It was pretty exciting for the kids and fans. We ran the ball 67 times to their 37. They ran a total of 6 plays in the 2nd and 6 in the 3rd quarter. We attempted 1 pass and it fell incomplete. When the backs learn to find the cut backs on the power play, we will be in business. The 4 backs had 86, 71 ,65,and 52 yards. What makes this even more special is that this is my hometown where I played my junior and senior year of football. Last time this school had a winning season? - When I was a junior in 1988. Up next week? - West Hancock, arch rival and 6th rated team in in Iowa in 2A."

HOXIE 27, Ness City 0 "Hi Coach Wyatt - We are starting our 3rd season of the double wing out here in northwest Kansas and things are going great. Last year Hoxie had its first winning season in 13 years, and last Friday we won the opener for the first time in 13 years beating a ranked opponent. Greg Meyer our "A" back rushed for 1477 yards in 1999 got off to a good start this year with 23 carries for 144 yards and 3 tds. We play a very good Dighton team this Friday at Dighton so we need to make sure we control the ball. We are going to run mostly out of Spread and Slot as well as a little up tight rip and liz. Talk to you again soon best of luck to you and your family as well as your team. Scott Moshier Hoxie High School Hoxie Kansas

REED CITY 30, Manistee 14 Coach MOnty Price: "This was a big one for us. We haven't beaten Manistee at the varsity level since 1993. Last year, they were a playoff team. They came out and made a commitment to stop our 88. They stacked it up over our tightend and really made it difficult. However, the Double-Wing proved to be too much for them. We just adjusted and ran our 99 all night long. Our C-back, Ryan Engle, had 124 yards in 16 carries. We also had a great deal of success running 3 base. Our B-back, Ryan Ward, had 69 yards with 3 TD's on this play alone. Like you said, the Double-Wing forces teams to play balanced defense. If they stack one side, we run the mirror play to the opposite side. Overall, we had 296 total yards with 292 coming from our ground game." WESTERN WATERWAYS ACTIVITIES - EAST

NORTH ST. PAUL 40, Mora 21 - "Coach Wyatt, I hope all is well with you and that your season has begun well. We just saw Paul Herzog's North Saint Paul team defeat our defending conference champions, Mora, 40-21 last Friday in a wild contest. NSP opened the game by running a 2 WEDGE play for 80 yards and a touchdown (Mora's kickoff had gone into the end zone) but Mora came back with a long run of their own to take a 7-6 lead. At that point, NSP began to run 88 and 99 SUPER POWER for impressive gains and then hit on two long touchdown passes one of which was tipped by a Mora defender to take a 20-7 halftime lead. Our scout was extremely impressed with the NSP attack and, later this week, we will be showing our ninth graders what a well prepared team can do with the attack." Mike O'Donnell, Freshman Coach, Pine City, Minnesota
FLORENCE 48, Mt. Olive 6 Coach Steve Jones: "We have WON 9 of our last 14 games since going to the double wing. We only won 10 of 43 games prior to going to the double wing. By the way, my younger son Cory has 28 carries for 259 yards in two games. Cory is a 5'10" 170 lb sophmore. He has also returned two punts for 82 yards."

ARAPAHOE 34, Franklin 12 - 250 yds rushing, 87 yds passing.. TD's on: Tight thunder throwback, Red-Red; 2 wedge; 7G; 56- C (72 yards)- Coach Daren Hatch: "I'm a little worried about the Big Red and the Golden Domers this weekend. Our defense, which has been our mainstay, was a little less than stellar vs San Jose St. The Huskers are very thin at D tackle (injury depleted) watch for the Golden Domers to pick on the middle of the Cornhusker D all day long."

TROY CATHOLIC CENTRAL 66, Mohonasen 18. Central Catholic ends 14-game losing streak in Coach Pete Porcelli's first game, scoring 10 more points than in the entire 1999 season. "The Hugh Wyatt offense was rolling. I even threw your name in with the local papers after the game telling them this is the Hugh Wyatt offense. Maybe I shouldn't have because now teams will be on your web site. Anyway we ran base stuff and did well. We scored 10 TDs, 1 kickoff return TD. 6g-7g you could have driven a truck through the hole. This team we played wasn't bad. We scouted them and thought they were tough. Remember - post this on your web site. Little Catholic Central with 21 guys dresed won by a score of 66-18. I will e-mail you the article in tomorrow's Troy record newspaper. Thanks. Pete Porcelli, 7-year veteran of the Arena Football League, putting up Arena-type numbers using your offense...(our qb is one tough kid and I would put him against your kid at LaCenter on Dynamics 2. He's 6-3, 190)
WEST SENECA WEST 22, Orchard Park 7 - "Coach Wyatt, I'm surprised at how quickly you found out about the Orchard Park game. Anyway, we played a complete team game. Kale had 132yrds. Matt Simon our B-back had 110, and the two players that share the C-back position combined for 86 yrds. One of the town's Pop Warner coaches was so impressed with the offense that he wants to install it for his program. We are going to purchase the 2nd. ed. playbook and donate it to the program. This Friday night we play a non-league game against Lewiston-Poter. With any luck we'll have the same success as we did against O.P." "TOGETHER WITH PRIDE" JIM AND LEN KUHN WSW-INDIANS

BROOKVILLE 28, Dayton Oakwood 0 - "Hello Coach, This avenges a 35 - 14 loss to them last season. Have gained 616 yards in two games. Held opponents to 258. Combined 51 - 7 score. The reverse and counter are very effective for us this year because teams thus far are trying to stop Randy Hubley. (A-Back) Best wishes, Marc Gibson
PERRYSBURG 61, Woodward 6 Coach Ray Pohlman: "We had 438 total yardage. Our team will have a challenge this week against an improved Toledo Waite team. It will be a physical game. They too are 2-0."

DANBURY 12, Saratoga West Hardin 0 - Coach Don Davis: "Coach Wyatt, Just wanted to let you know that we won our opening game at Saratoga West Hardin 12-0. We rushed for 227 yds....the bad news...17 penalties for 125 yds. Hopefully, we can clean that up (motion, ill. procedure, etc). Our quarterback, Bradley Gandy, rushed for 101 yds.,passed for 55 yds and scored both touchdowns (mostly 39 keeper, G- keep and boots). Our B-back, Brent Zwahr, rushed for 55 yds on 13 carries and our A-back carried 10 times for 42 yds. We were on their 10 yd line when time expired. Not great stats but we'll take the win. By the way, this is the first shutout for the Panther defense in YEARS. Thanks for all your help."

NORTH DELTA COLTS 18, North Surrey Eagles 6 - Coach Roger Kelly - "Coach Wyatt: We opened the regular season with a hard-fought 18-6 victory over the North surrey Eagles. A big, physical team, the Eagles really made us work for this one. The counters were wide open in the first half and we scored two touchdowns off the 47-C. In the second they started to shut that down. Looks to me like poor execution due to fatigue was the culprit. Many of my players are two-way players and they have two big bruising backs we finally shut down. We finally put it away in the fourth with our B-back on a 5 X lead. He took it 40 yards for the score. That's a play we use very successfully. The Eagles have played us twice before and prepared all week for the DWing and were sure they would stop it..."
CALIFORNIA
C.V. BULLDOGS (Redding) 34-0, Anderson Midgets 0 (7th and 8th grade) Coach Don Hodson: "We had 342 yards rushing with seven different backs running the ball. The defense gave up 3 first downs all on penalties. We have only 5 kids with go both ways which are running backs on offense so there not even full time players on offense."

HANOVER PARK HURRICANES 12, Wheaton 0 - Coach Bil Lawlor: "We opened our regular season with a tough 12-0 win over perennial power Wheaton. Hurricanes took 50 snaps and controlled the clock throughout the game, passing only four times. Canes spread the rushing duties out evenly with A-Back Joey Mueller rushing for 70 yards, B-Back Trey Porter pounding for 95 yards and C-Back Jonathan Smith grinding out 55. A total of 243 offensive yards for the 110 pound team running the double wing for the first time. The defense was outstanding and denied all scoring opportunities close to the goal line." Line Coach John Urbaniak: "It was a very gratifying victory. We ran the wedge about 6-7 times...one going for 17 yards!!! This line is really excited about the new offense. I put it in the last week of last year's season, so they got a good look at it, really prepared them for this year. This offense is just what this team needed....Thanks for sharing it with our program. "
KENTUCKY
DAVIESS COUNTY (FRESHMAN) 8, Owensboro 6 - Coach David Crump: "Last night the Daviess County freshmen defeated the highly rated Owensboro freshmen 8-6 at their stadium. It is the first victory over the Owensboro freshmen in 6 years!! The winning touchdown was scored on red red, banana route. Tight 3 wedge scored the 2 point conversion. We had to go to 3 because Owensboro had a 6'4" 275 lb. tackle playing over my165 lb. guard! 3wedge was our best play all night! I ran it 7 straight times in the third quarter when nothing else was going right. Owensboro took two timeouts to try and stop the wedge. The head coach came down from the press box and took charge of the defense!! He jammed the middle and tried to send the LBs through the A gaps. He also had the corners come off the corners and we hit them with tight end screen left for big yardage. I had been saving it for such an occassion. It got us down to their 27 yard line and from there we ran powers and wedges to the13 yardline. We then threw red red for the winning touchdown!Owensboro had the ball at the end of the game and drove the length of the field. They threw a halfback option pass as the horn sounded from our 30 yardline and completed it. My safety was standing on the goalline and dropped the Owensboro receiver at our 6 yardl ine to end the game! Our fans streamed out onto the field and it looked like we were going to Disneyworld! These kids have never beaten Owensboro ever. Neither middle school that feeds the high school ever beat them in 6,7or 8th grade. Hugh, I thank you again for this offense. It sure makes me look like an offensive genius. Keep working and refining this great system of yours."

Had a forty yard wedge TD called back for a clip 20 yards behind the play. Scored our 2 TDs on the wedge. 1 from 8 yards out and the other in OT from 2. Tied 6-6 at the end of regulation, Grassland scored on their first posession but failed on the PAT. We ran the 88 Power for 8 on 1st down and scored on the wedge. Ran the 88 Power again for the PAT for the win."

HILLCREST HUSKIES 20, Riverton Silverwolves 0 - Coach Glen Page: "After two games we are 2-0. Our first week we played the Bingham Miners and won 19-0. We piled up around 300 yards on the ground. Week two saw much of the same action. We rushed for about 380 yards and beat the Riverton Silverwolves 20-0. We've only passed the ball seven times in two games. We have scored six touchdowns with five different backs. So far most of our success has come off the trap and 6/7 G. The parents in our league think I'm some sort of genius. During the first game my wife said she heard quite a bit of snickering about our lack of passing. She was happy to report that she didn't hear one word about it during the second game."
TAYLORSVILLE WARRIORS - 28 Granger Lancers 6 - "My 11 year olds played their first game today and we beat a pretty good team 28-6. The counters went big, our powers need work. You may remember an official last year who told me my wings couldn't push on the tackles on 2 wedge. We had him today, and the head lead official straightened him out last year on the wedge. Today, he made up another rule. We shift into punt formation like you do. I make sure my punter don't simulate taking a snap. In fact his hands are on the centers back. This yo-yo who has been officiating 30 years said my punter couldn't back pedal to his punt position. He said he had to turn sideways and run back. I don't know where he got that, but we only had to punt that once." Coach Al Andrus (whose 14-year-old team last year led the state in scoring - 38 points per game.)
