WINNERS - WEEKEND OF 10-04-02
EDMONTON, ALBERTA (CANADA) - JASPER PLACE (SENIORS) 21, Parkland 7
EDMONTON, ALBERTA (CANADA) - JASPER PLACE (JUNIORS) 42, Harry Ainlay 7 - The kids played extremely well. Every aspect of our game improved over last week. We ran the best 88 & 99 powers ever run by our team in the time we have been running the offence here. It was literally a parting of the red sea for the a & c backs! C's put the last nail in the coffin. For the first time in 3 years we attempted a field goal. We have an exchange student who wanted to kick for us so he has been practising and missed a forty yarder by 10 feet left, hit a 25 and then a 30. He also converted 5 TD's. As a I told the kids the machine is rollin'! Kyle Wagner
PHOENIX, AZ - The La Joya Lobos continued the building of their new program last night with a 20-18 win over Estrella Foothills High School. The Lobos scored on a 99 SP, 47 C and a 2 Wedge. We're happy to get a win, but not particularly happy with our performance, as we didn't play well. We were really trying to combat their "strategy" of diving at our legs and grabbing our ankles and were flagged 3 times for not having enough men on the line of scrimmage. Thought G-O Reach was game ready, but discovered it actually wasn't. More practice needed. Season Record 3-0-1. Mike Waters Head Coach
DANA POINT, CA - SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY PATRIOTS (9-10 years olds) 13, Compton Pathfinders 0 - Hi Coach,This week we faced the extremely fast Compton Pathfinders. They submarined their tackles and nose guard which made it impossible to wedge and with their speed, it was tough getting much outside. We used their speed and athleticism against them and as they over-reacted to the 88/99, we came back with the counters for big yardage. Our back-up A back came up strong in the second quarter with two 20 yard runs. With one minute left in the first half, Compton broke loose around the end for what appeared to be a game tying 50 yard TD. He somehow dropped the ball on the 5 yard line and our pursuing backside end was there to recover. They never got their momentum back after that. Thanks again Coach for all your help! Al Bellanca
GRAND JUNCTION, CO - EAST 49'ers 32, Grand Mesa Steelers 6: Another big win for the 49er's and the Double Wing. Scored on the 3rd play of the game with a 55yrd 56 c. Next drive we scored on a long 99 power. After the Steelers put together their best drive of the day they turned the ball over on our two yrd. line after a big hit in the back field. We punched it out to the 15 with 3 wedge and 6 g then scored on an 85 yrd criss cross 47 c. The offensive line is really starting to get after people! Man is it fun to watch them move people. The defense played a great game also. The only score we gave up was on a fake punt. We finished the season 5-2. The play offs begin Saturday!! Ted Quinton
KERSEY, CO - PLATTE VALLEY COLTS 12, Johnstown/Milliken Mustangs 6 (Middle School)- It's getting a bit chilling in the high country this time of year. We played a rival yesterday and it was a tough game as usual. Once again, we gave up about 50 lbs or more a player on the line. I found out that we actually were playing the conference championship as the Mustangs had won the North division and were undefeated coming into the contest. We jumped out to 6 - 0 lead but the Mustangs responded to tie it up at halftime as our defense gave up it's second touchdown this year. We had trouble holding on to the ball on our first drive of the second half but our second drive with 10 plays for 65 yards put the game away by running down the clock and taking it to bank for the win. We finished up with 180 yards and touchdowns from the Wedge and G.O. sweep. I did not throw the ball except for an extra point (incomplete) and kept a simple diet of forced feeding of 4 yards and cloud of dust. The Double Wing with its beauty of wearing down a team with superior size and strength continues to gain a following with the players, parents and students. I have lost starters in all positions - Quarterback (week 2), Runningback (week 2 & 3), Offensive lineman (week 3, 4 & 5) and still have been able to place a team to compete on the field every game this year. This has been one of the most challenging coaching years I have ever had due to the injury bug. We finish up the season next Thursday and it will give all the players a year to heal - I hope we can grow a little. Second thought, THE HELL, we need to grow a lot!
LAS ANIMAS, CO - LAS ANIMAS 46, Peyton 21 - Trojans snap back from 21-20 halftime deficit. The Trojans were 0 for 1 passing but ran the ball 74 times for 570 yards. B-back had 29 carries for 206 yards and one TD; A-back had 20 carries for 170 yards and 2 TD's; C-back had 13 carries for 117 yards and 2 TD's. Ball control was incredible. We had 31:33 of possession time (19:26 in the second half), and we had 26 first downs. We will be off next week. We are taking the team to the Air Force Academy to watch AFA vs. BYU next Saturday. Our next game is in two weeks against the always tough Limon Badgers. Greg Koenig
PLANTATION, FL - PLANTATION WILDCATS 28 Cooper City 20 (7&8 yrs old) We are still undefeated (7-0). You were right about going outside vs the 4-4. We scoreD on 88 twice and 99 once. You were also right that the Wedge would work against the stand up linebackers. We watched film from two of their games and saw that they shift the entire kickoff team to the friendly side of the field and then onside kick there. We put our best kids there and on the openning kickoff, our QB swept it around the opposite side for a TD. A great way to start a game. We put in the subs after going up 28 - 14 and gave up a late TD. Thanks for the help! Mike Kahn
UMATILLA, FL - UMATILLA 56, Wildwood 7 - Bulldogs rush for 220 yards in first half, building a 36-7 lead, finish with 354 yards - 119 by Dontrel "Freight Train" Lewis - to move into first place in District.
ALTA, IA - ALTA 34, Woodbury Central 33 - Coach Wyatt: Alta, Iowa knocked off the Des Moines Register's #10 ranked team on the road Friday night. Final score: Alta 34 Woodbury Central 33. It was a track meet! Before this game Woodbury Central had only given up 10 points on the season!! B-Back had a big night after being overlooked much of the year. Scored 2 TD's off of sweep boot action and had an 85 yd kickoff return for a TD. Had 355 return yards. They finally quit kicking off to us and started squibbing the ball. Rushing totals: A-Backs 22 carr 98 yds; B-Backs 13 carr 111 yds 1 TD; C-Backs 6 carr 30 yds; QB 6 carr 15 yds 1 TD; Passing 3-5 att 19 yds 2 TD's. Need to get better (especially defensively), but really appreciate the heart and determination this team plays with. We now sit at 4-1 and are in the hunt for the school's first ever playoff berth. Scott Lovell
FOREST CITY, IA - FOREST CITY 17, Waterloo-Columbus (OT) The Indians of FC got their first win this Friday night in overtime vs. Waterloo -Columbus 17-14. We were down 14-7 at half, but came out and held them to 21 yards of offense in the 2nd half and overtime. Our offense controlled the game, limiting them to 12 offensive plays in the second half including an 18 play, 9 minute scoring drive. They had the ball not quite 2 minutes in the 4th quarter, and less than 5 in the 3rd. It was a great way to end a very emotional week for our school with the tragedy of 1 HS girl dying and another seriously injured in an auto accident. Our opponents so far remain unbeaten at 20-0, and this week we take on unbeaten and 4th ranked Clear Lake. It has been a heck of a schedule, have been within 2 tds except for 1 game. Kids still have a great attitude. Jason Sopko
FREDERICKSBURG, IA - Fredericksburg 20 Postville 12
HOLSTEIN, IA - GALVA-HOLSTEIN 47 WLVA 0 - 23 first downs; 61 rushes for 478 yards... Starters A Back 15 carries 125 yards 1 TD; B Back 4 carries 22 yards 1 TD; C Back 15 carries 174 yards 3 TD's ; QB 6 carries 37 yards; Backups (Combined) A Backs- 6 carries 25 yards; B Backs- 8 carries for 53 yards; C Backs- 6 carries for 71 yards 2 TD's - O and D Line dominated the entire game. Big homecoming win, and almost everyone played. Still will have parents mad because their kid didn't play as much as someone else! Pirates are now 5-0 and ranked 3rd in Class 1A. Brad Knight
BLOOMINGDALE, IL - BLOOMINGDALE BEARS 20 Downers Grove Panthers 6 - (90 # Gold Division) After dropping our first game of the season last week to the Tri-City Green Chargers we rebounded in a big way this weekend with a huge win. We scored touchdowns on 47 C and 6 G pass and just controlled the line of scrimmage all day. After losing our first game of the year Coach Clay Cooper decided we needed to go back to the basics and go back to working with our line blocking assignments and the techniques that made us successful early on. This week's practice was strictly dedicated to refreshing our kids minds on the blocking techniques and schemes used in the Double Wing and it sure did make a difference in the game. We pulled and trapped better than we've done in a while and our pass protection was super. Our QB didn't get sacked 1 time the whole game. Sometimes it takes a loss to wake you up and get you refocused on the little things that can make or break a football team. Stacey King (Amen. HW)
COLFAX, IL - RIDGEVIEW 66, Chenoa 8 - Coach, Got back in the win column tonight after two tough losses. rushed for 455 yards on 41 carries. was 2-4 passing for 27 yards. Mike Benton
EAST MOLINE, IL - UNITED TOWNSHIP 9, Rock Island 6 - We upset the #4 team in Illinois, Rock Island, 9-7 with a GASP! FG on the last play of the game. Mark Kaczmarek
HANOVER PARK, IL - HANOVER PARK 80# HURRICANES 20, Tri City Black 6. Hurricanes go to 7-0 with a win on the road. Canes put up three touchdowns in the second quarter. A-Back Aaron Thabuteau got in first on a 16 yard Lead Criss Cross 66-C. B-Back Javaun McDonald scored on the next two drives, hitting a 65 yarder off of Spread Lazer 29 Reach and then a beautifully blocked Rip 3 Trap at 2 for 60 yards. Left Guard Dorian Eddins was the standout offensive lineman for the game and the defense kept a much larger opponent in check. Our last regular season game is next week as we try for an undefeated regular season. I am so proud of these 8 & 9 year olds who are running the double wing like High School veterans. Bill Lawlor
OLYMPIA FIELDS, IL - RICH CENTRAL 43, Thornton Fractional North 12 - For the second straight week, wingbacks Victor Boles and Segun Ayeni rushed for over 100 yards. Bols had 197 yards on 25 carries. Ayeni, who also played some B-Back, carried 21 times for 184 and four TD's, including an 8-yard scoring dash on the first play of the game.
LEAWOOD, KS - 5TH GRADE LANCERS 36, Vikings 6. We scored early and often. We ran 88 POWER three times in a row scoring on the third play. For the p.a.t. we ran a QB boot out of 88 Power. The film was incredible on this one as the 9 tech came up field and started chasing the 88 only to have the QB slide passed him for the score. We also accomplished a first by scoring a 2 WEDGE play from 60 yards out. The kid just kept moving his feet looking like Tommie Frazier in the 95 Orange Bowl running out of tackles. Michael Ruitherford
SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA - FRONTIER M.S. 14, Amherst 8
GREENBELT, MD - GREENBELT RAIDERS 95lb 20, Bowie Bulldogs 20-0 - 47c was the backbreaker 2 Td's.........Blue-Blue also went for a score....The kids were a little slow off the ball but we will get it together... Dwayne Pierce
THURMONT, MD - CATOCTIN 34, Smithsburg 12 - Catoctin rolls up 390 yards to win for the second time in five days. Cougars are 4-1 for first time since 1986.
BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME - BOOTHBAY REGION 58, Jay 22 - Boothbay Region H.S is now 5-0 having beaten Jay High School 58-22. Our B-Back ran for 177 yards on seven carries, scoring on long runs off 6G and 3 trap @ 4. Our A- back rushed for 144 yards on 10 carries all on 88 Super Power. We still have not reached a point where the coaching staff is happy with the kids - lots of little mistakes, the kind we are not used to making. We will need to correct them if we want to continue as two of the next three games are with play-off opponents. Jack Tourtillotte
FARMINGTON HILLS, MI - NFWB VARSITY VIKINGS 16 (6-0), Madison Heights Wolverines 0 (5-1). It was a very physical game as we expected against a very tough MH team. Our defense once again anchored us allowing less than 50 yards rushing and approx. 35 yards through the air. The offense played a solid game giving us scores twice in the 1st half on 99 SP (45 and 55 yards) and kicking both extra points. We had an 85 yard TD on 88 SP called back with 13 seconds left in the 1st half on a very questionable block in the back call. I kept the play calling very conservative after our 2 scores seeing that the defense was smothering the Wolverine O and since we will be playing MH's head coach's brother in two weeks and might play MH again, I figured I would stay with the basics and run the time off of the clock. We are now solidly in first place as the only undefeated team in the league and with the toughest part of our schedule behind us. Just three more games and then on to the playoffs, the first playoff appearance for the Vikings at the varsity level in about 4-5 years. Donnie Hayes
TROY, MI - TROY COWBOYS 27, Royal Oak Chargers 12. We are now 5 & 1, but we are a raggy defense. That's my specialty, so I am the goat right now. Anyway, we had 197 yards running & because our starting QB is back, we had 101 yards passing. Ted Bealin was 4 of 8 for 2 TD's & no interceptions. One dropped pass was a sure TD, but the kid caught the next one for a score. 2 others were long shots we tried with time running out. The 3 @ 2 trap was huge & the 47C went for a 65 yard run. Our freshman coach, who has been reluctant to run the double wing consistently, came over after their toughest game of the year, to thank me for teaching them the double wing. He & their line coach, who played line in college, agreed it was the only thing that ran well & won for them. I hope things are going well for you; your offense has helped things go well for us. Take care. Bill Livingstone
COLUMBIA, MS - COLUMBIA 26, Prentiss 6 - We lost 3 close ball games early, but I think we have turned the corner. We are 1-1 in division play. I have had two starters move since the season began. MLB and a DB. Our QB really struggled at first. He is now 8 of 9 in the last two games. We have rushed for 350 yards or more in 5 of 6 games. Fumbles and interceptions did us in. No turnovers in the last two games. Steve Jones
CAPE MAY, NJ - LOWER CAPE MAY RAIDERS 43, Cumberland Regional Fr. High 40 - Hugh, Two weeks ago all we heard was this O just won't work. It can't score points, it's just the same play over and over. How's 94 points in the last two games sound? Now we are hearing bitching that we are running up the score. Frank Simonsen
LANSINGBURGH, NY - LANSINGBURGH 60, Broadalbin Perth 6 - Kareem Jones ran for 204 yards and three touchdowns and returned a kickoff 65 yards for another touchdown, Marcel Youngs rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns and Shonte Freeman rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead Lansingburgh to victory, Lansingburgh, now 5-0, has outscored opponents 326-36. Pete Porcelli
QUEENSBURY, NY - QUEENSBURY 28, Glens Fall 26 - Coach, We won a big one against Glens Falls who had been 4-0. I only had 21 of my 31 players eligible to play because of injuries, illness, and discipline problems but we raised our level for the win. 3 way tie for the sectional lead in class A. John Irion
DANBURY, TX - DANBURY 27, Huntington 18 - Coach Wyatt, We won our fourth straight Friday night. Danbury Panthers 27, Huntington Red Devils 18. Huntington is a class AAA school with an enrollment of 516 students, while we are AA with 246 kids. We ran for 349 yds on 54 carries. We were trailing at one point by a score of 18-0, yet came from behind throwing NO passes. The stats in the Houston Chronicle sure look odd, I'm sure. C-back Nicoli Aguinaga ran for 142 yds on 17 carries scoring 2 TDs. A-back Chris Sodek had 76 yds on 6 carries, 2 TDs and had one INT. Also, A-back Joe Bulanek ran for 61 yds on 13 carries and B-back Patrick Kelley had 55 yds on 16 carries. First district game is this week. We'll keep you posted. Thanks for everything. Don Davis
ROANOKE, VA - CAVE SPRING STAMPEDE 5, Vinton Terriers 0
EDMONDS, WA- EDMONDS CYCLONES WHITE 20, Cyclones red 6. We beat a very tough team in our other junior team and ran our record to 5-0. We scored on 47XX, 88 Power, and 6G (40 yards out). Our defense stepped up and held them several times inside our 20. I'm convinced the II Wing has made our kids better on defense. They hit harder and have a much better attitude while on defense. We play the only other unbeaten team next week, the Stanwood Spartans. They have a very good team but I like our chances if we execute and I stay patient. Glade Hall
LA CENTER, WA - LA CENTER 47, Stevenson 12
BIRCHWOOD/WEYERHAEUSER, WI - BIRCHWOOD/WEYERHAEUSER 39, Bruce 12
BLOOMER, WI- BLOOMER 26, Spooner 21 - Battle of two double wing teams-Spooner switched to running the wing after trying to defend us during the past several years. Our experience and size proved to be the difference on a field best described as a "cow yard" after 4.6 inches of rain in 12 hours. Again the versatility of the innovations tape (Dynamics III) gave us the edge over the less experienced 1st yr double wing team. Scott Beranek
CAMERON, WI - CAMERON 10, Grantsburg 0 - Cameron wins battle of Double-Wing teams. "We played a 4-4 and a 6-2 against them and they played a 5 front against us. We both knew each other well as we play every year and have both run the double wing the past 5 years. They beat us 14-0 as we turned the ball over several times inside the 10 yard line and had some key mental errors and penalties. What it really came down to was they were more physical on the line of scrimmage and executed better. There was no magic defense on either side. I have heard of and seen the magic defenses but it always comes down to talent and execution." Coach Keith Lehne, Grantsburg High School, Grantsburg, Wisconsin
GREEN BAY, WI - GREEN BAY PREBLE 49, Sheboygan North 14
