WINNERS - WEEKEND OF 10-25-02

EDMONTON, ALBERTA (CANADA) - JASPER PLACE 20, Parkland 7 - What a tough football game! We are now 5-1 and alone in second place. They came out very intense and ready to play as always, but our kids played with a lot of emotion and heart. It was a real offensive battle even though the score doesn't reflect it. The game ended with a great amount of positive emotion but what really topped it off for me was a comment by one of the referees. After the game he came over to me and said this was one of the nicest group of kids he has ever refed. He was very pleased at there courtesy by always handing the ball to them after each play and how polite they all were. I thanked him and said I appreciated that since we worked hard at not only teaching them to play hard but to play with class. I had never defeated this team as a double wing coach. If you remember, this is the team we lost to in the Championship 3 years ago. It seems that they really gage their season by how they play against us. Former players have said to us that they study JP film from the beginning of the year. In their last game they scored 2 defensive td's and 0 offensive td's. They said that they were saving all their plays for our game. Can you believe that! Kyle Wagner

NORTH SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA (CANADA) NORTH SURREY 56, Moscrop 42- Coach Although it was the second win of the season for the fledgling North Surrey High Spartans, it became officially the first. We actually defeated the Abbotsford Panthers a few weeks ago 41-26 but the team then "folded" soon after their loss to us and now plays only exhibition games???? Friday night we beat Moscrop 56-42. However the score is misleading as it easily could have finished 70-20. We have such a large roster that all the 2nd and 3rd stringers played defense in the second half. Of course we ran the 88 super power to death. But I love using both criss-crosses and the 43 tackle trap. At one point I actually called for a 43 tackle trap, but the QB somehow got confused and ran a 3 trap 2 and before I could argue the FB took it in from 35 yards out... We also scored on a Blue Blue. Again, we are a first-year team but are among the highest scoring teams in the league. We won't make the playoffs, but as one coach told another, he was happy he played us early in the season and not now. Roger Kelly

DALEVILLE, AL - DALEVILLE 58, Bullock County 0

PHOENIX, AZ - LA JOYA 21, Notre Dame Prep 13 (Freshmen) The La Joya Lobos earned another hard fought victory last night against Notre Dame Prep 21 - 13. They used a 6-1 scheme with a very tight cover 2. We struggled a bit at the beginning since our passing game is below average. It would have been nice to pass a bit more to take advantage of what they were giving us and loosen them up, but it just wasn't working. We ran lots of 6 and 7 G's and the fullback was getting 5-8 yards a pop and getting tackled by the safeties. We scored to make it 12 - 13 with 6 minutes to go and not knowing if we'd get the ball back and not wanting to have a tie (we already have one from our 6-6 tie the first game) I told the kids we were going for 2. We ran a 99 super power keep and out QB could have walked in. We did get the ball back with about 3 minutes to go and up by one when our fullback busted a 7G for about 55 yards and tackled on the 4. Perfect... a couple of wedges to run as much time off the clock as possible and we scored on the 3rd one with a little over a minute to go. GO LOBOS... season record 5-1-1 with one game to go. Mike Waters (La Joya, a brand-new school, is freshman-only this year)

DANA POINT, CA - SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY PATRIOTS 34, Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs 4 - The SOC Patriots Clinic Division (9-10 year olds) finished out our regular season unbeaten at 8-0. So far, we have scored an average of 30 points per game and have given up only 3. We head into the 41 team play-offs as the top seeded team in our division. This week our offense was very balanced and our backs are finally taking advantage of the big cut-back opportunities provided by over pursuing defenses. We threw 6 times, completed 5, 4 of which passed the goal line. Al Bellanca

LAS ANIMAS, CO - LAS ANIMAS 53, Calhan 8 - The Trojans concluded their season with a 53-8 domination of the Bulldogs. Calhan ran an 8-1-2 defensive alignment which allowed for lots of big plays once we broke the line of scrimmage. The Trojans used ten different runners to gain 535 yards and score six TD's on 57 carries. Passing game was 3-6 for 62 yards and one TD (Black Throwback), but we also threw two INT's. The Trojans will miss the playoffs for the first time in three years, but it was a successful season as we finished with a 5-3 record. With five sophomores and one junior starting on both sides of the ball all season, we will return a great deal of talent and experience next year. However, we lose seven quality seniors who will be difficult to replace. We need to continue to dominate with the double-wing. Greg Koenig

PLANTATION, FL - PLANTATION WILDCATS 13 Davie Broncos 0 (7&8 yrs old). We are still undefeated with one game left before the playoffs. Mike Kahn

UMATILLA, FL - UMATILLA 22, Mount Dora 12 - The Umatilla Bulldogs (7-1) took the opening kickoff and drove 71 yards for the first score, jumped out to a 22-0 third-quarter lead, and then fought off a Mount Dora comeback to lock up the Class 2A, District 5 championship. Dontrel Lewis had two of Umatilla's three touchdowns, and Mount Dora quarterback Maurice White completed touchdown plays of 27 and 50 yards. The last time Umatilla made the playoffs was 1995.Mount Dora coach Craig Cosden, whose team had a four-game win streak snapped, was gracious in defeat. "I'm happy for Umatilla's program," he told the Orlando Sentinel. "If we had to lose, at least we lost to them." "We won our first district title since 1992 with a 22-12 win over Mt Dora. We have one district and 1 non district game left, but we are the only undefeated team in the district. We are surely getting everyone's A-game, and we put together three long drives against Mt Dora to gain a 22-0 lead. The only two possession we had in the first half resulted in one 9 minute, 71 yard, 12 play drive, and the other in a 15 play, 61 yard drive that took eight more minutes off the clock and had us leading 14-0 at the half. In the third quarter we drove 61 yards in 15 plays to go up 22-0. Our JV team finished their regular season 7-0 for the second year in a row and they have a 17 game winning streak. We are currently 7-1 and 4-0 in the district for the varsity." Ron Timson

FREDERICKSBURG, IA - FREDERICKSBURG 27 Sumner 6 ; With this win the Falcons appear to have secured a playoff spot for the third year in a row. In our win over Sumner A-back Neil Suckow 17 carries 182 yds, 2TDs running and he threw for one as well.QB Clayton Niewoehner was 4 for 5 118 yds and 2 TDs. ALTON, IL - ALTON 23, Belleville East 17 - Coach, The Alton Redbirds won again and have a 6-3 record. We beat Belleville East 23-17. Our A back went over the 1000 yard mark. That accomplishment has not happened in a decade. We also became the first team to make the playoffs two years in a row at our school. We also are the first team to have winning records back to back since 1983-84. We drew a team in Class 8A. Alton is the smallest school in the class 8A playoffs this year. We were borderline 7A but there were some major upsets in Chicagoland area and therefore we were bumped up.

COLFAX, IL - Ridgeview 20, Lexington 0 - First EVER win against Lexington in school history. 260 yards rushing, 110 yards passing. QB was 6/12 110 yards and 3 TD's. BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME - BOOTHBAY REGION 32, Oak Hill 20 - The Seahawks went to 8-0 last night with a 32-20 win over the 6-2 Oak Hill Raiders. B-Back Max Arsenault had 178 yards russing on 15 plays, scoring on long runs of 43 yards on 3 trap at 4 and 48 yard run on a 6-G. Will Carroll was 6-12 passing with two TD's on a 47 Brown O-X and a 43 Brown. He threw for 130 yards and leads the conference in percentage of completions. So far he his 30-50 and eight TD's. Not bad for an offense people say you can't throw from. This win clinches the Campbell Conference Title and secures home field advantage for the state play-offs. Jack Tourtillotte

NORTH FARMINGTON, MI - NFWB VARSITY VIKINGS (9-0) 36, Shelby Lions 0. We finished our regular season undefeated, a first for this organization. It took us roughly a quarter and a half to beat Shelby. We opened the game with a 50 yard TD run on 6 G. We only had 127 yards on the ground but it was on only 6 carries for a 21.2 yards/attempt average and 3 TDs. We threw four times and completed two for 39 yards, a TD and an extra point. Our defense added our 5th TD on a 68 yard interception return. Our defense has been devastating this year and is now starting to put up some points for us. Our D is number one in the league having given up only 30 points (24 to the other DW team in the league). We held the Lions to -3 yards on 14 attempts. We now start to prepare for a very tough challenge in our first game of the playoffs against the Royal Oak Chargers. We have beaten them once and if we do it again, this league might get to see an all Double Wing showdown in the SuperBowl. How would you like to see that? Donnie Hayes (Coach Hayes is referring to the Troy Cowboys, who narrowly lost in an earlier meeting with the Vikings. You doggone right I'd like to see that.)

TROY, MI - TROY COWBOYS 44, Berkely Steelers 12. We finished 8-1 and now begin the playoffs. We had 245 yards in total offense in limited action before the mercy rule took effect. The new season starts and we hope it's a good one. See you Coach. Dave Livingstone (See above)

COLUMBIA, MS - COLUMBIA 23, West Marion 12

HOPE MILLS, NC - HOPE MILLS FALCONS 18, Hope Mills HeadHunters 12 - Well, We won our game and clinched the Hope Mills Division Championship. Next we get ready for County Championship game. The score was 18-12. A very hard battle but we led the whole way. Can you believe we won 6 straight games (record is 6-0) without one single complete pass! Double Wing is the way. It took our average players and made them better. BTW we beat the 5 time champs to become the champs. Now we have one regular season game left and we are going to rest some injured players and let our B offense take over. They have been successful this year so now we let them start the last game and get more experience. Ray Knagge

COLUMBUS, NE - COLUMBUS SCOTUS 36, David City 13 - Well, we got the third one in a row Friday night 36-13 over David City Public. We rushed for 344 yards on 46 attempts and complete 7-12 passes for 178 yards. Unfortunately, we gave up over 200 yards passing. Their QB was amazing. He has at least three games over 300 yards passing. Anyway, the team we needed to win to get us in the playoffs dropped the ball, so we finished one team away from the playoffs. Still, we end the season on a winning note. We return our A and C backs and our QB. On Friday our A back had 177 yards rushing on 20 carries and caught 3 balls for 107 yards. Our C back had 87 yards rushing on 11 carries. Our QB threw for 666 yards on the season, completing 43 of 79 attempts. Again, thank Coach Wyatt and see you at a clinic this spring. God bless, Steve Cozad
