WINNERS - WEEKEND OF 9-27-02

PHOENIX, AZ- LA JOYA 28, Notre Dame Prep 14 - The La Joya Lobos continued their unbeaten streak with a 28-14 win over Notre Dame Prep. Our Double Wing continued to serve us well as we scored on a 88 SP, a 2 wedge that we ran on 3& 6 which busted for a 45 yard TD, a 99 power keep and a 47 counter. 4 different players scored. We also had a kick off returned for a touchdown which was called back since one of our kids decided to clip when the returner was 20 yards past him... All 53 eligible players saw playing time, keeping our promise that all players who meet our attendance and practice requirements will play in every game. Not much passing game: 1 of 3 for 25 yards, but we really didn't need to. We plan on having our sweep and A/C screen ready before next weeks game. We've been working on them and think they're almost "game ready". Mike Waters Head Coach (La Joya is a brand-new school, playing freshman-only football)

YUMA, AZ - YUMA SCORPIONS 18, Sun Devils (Red) 0 - We pulled out another one to go 3-0 on the season. We scored twice on 38 GO down, once out of tight and once out of RAMBO. O-line is beginning to come around. Stew Stewart

DANA POINT, CA- SOUTH ORANGE COUNTY PATRIOTS 41, Compton Titans 0 (9-10 year olds) Coach, Things went flawlessly as we opened this week's contest against the Compton Titans with a Wedge at 2 for a 42 yard sprint into the end zone. Our fullback ran for over 120 yards as we pounded the wedge, traps and 6/7 G. We added one 47-C XX for a long TD and three 6-G passes, all completed. We are 4-0 and our major strength is our diversity. In each of three victories, either the A, B or C back stepped it up for over 100 yards rushing and multiple TD's. In the forth victory, our rushing was balanced and our QB completed 9-12 for 175 yards and three TD's. I'm glad I don't have to prepare to defend us. Al Bellanca

NORTH HIGHLANDS, CA - HIGHLANDS 28, Buhach Colony HS 27

GRAND JUNCTION, CO - EAST 49's 28, Bookcliff Chiefs 6. This was a big game for us. We were tied for 3rd in the leage with the Chiefs. The kids played the best game of the year on both sides of the ball. We were up 19 - 0 at half time. We scored twice on 3 wedge, once after a 30 yrd. 6-g and the other after a long 99-sp. Scored the other two TD's on 47-c and 56-c. It was great to get the back up player's in the game in the second half. Thanks again Hugh! Ted Quinton

KERSEY, CO - PLATTE VALLEY COLTS 30, Highland Huskies 16 (Middle School)- Colts won their last division game to take the title. Our opponent's team had a man child at running back and a good sized line to go with him. Our defense gave up their first touchdown of the year in the first quarter as we traded scores in the quarter. We took the lead with a good long drive in the second and did stop them on their second drive BUT I called a pass play when we got the ball back instead of running it down their throat. They had nine guys in the box and our Quarterback did not get off a good throw - Bingo - they picked it off and took it to the bank to take a half time lead of 16 to 14. This team continues to show their metal in the second half with three good drives and great defense to put the game way. We finished up with 195 yards rushing with 8 backs and scoring with Wedge, Super Power and Counter (twice). We have a scrimmage next week with another rival and then find out who we face for the Conference title in two weeks. John Dillon

LAS ANIMAS, CO - LAS ANIMAS 36, Crowley County 19 - The Trojans came back from a 19-12 deficit early in the third quarter with a complete domination of the second half. For the game we ran the ball 62 times for 385 yards and four TD's. We completed 4 of 9 passes for 89 yards and two TD's (one on a halfback pass). However, we were unsuccessful on all six PAT attempts (definitely something to work on). B-back carried 24 times for 139 yards and two TD's. C-back carried 12 times for 130 yards and two TD's (He went 68 yards on 99 super power on our first offensive play of the second half.). A-back carried 22 times for 97 yards. We had 28:59 for time of possession. This win puts us right back in the thick of things for the league title and #1 seed for playoffs. They hurt us with a fade pass to an outstanding 6'3" receiver in the first half, but the twin tilt allowed us to pressure the qb in the second half (four sacks, one fumble, one interception) and we took over from there. Greg Koenig

PLANTATION, FL - PLANTATION WILDCATS 37 Pasadena Lakes 0 (7 & 8 yrs old) - We racked up 395 yards of offense. We scored on 88, 99 and W2. We had five kids score six touchdowns. Our quarters are only 8 minutes long and we have a rule that prohibits us from ever being ahead by more than 42 points. We had to kneel the ball four times when we got it with about 3 minutes on the clock. Thanks again Coach Wyatt. Mike Kahn

ALTA, IA - ALTA 26, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 14 - Stopped on the 1yd line for the 2nd week in a row. Have to get this fixed! Rushing: A-Back 29 carries 133 yds 2 TD's; B-Back 3 carries 7 yds; C-Back 19 carries 85 yds; Passing 5-8 att 95 yds 1 TD. Also ran back an interception for a TD. Kids played extremely hard...but didn't always play very smart. Making things harder than what they need to be. Need to work on some things this week...but it is great to be back in the Winner's Circle. Scott Lovell

HOLSTEIN, IA - GALVA-HOLSTEIN 27, Logan Magnolia 19 - 45 carries 243 yards; 4 of 6 passing for 49 yards... A Back 21 carries 138 yards 1 TD, B Back 4 carries for 9 yards 1 TD, C Back 13 carries for 78 yards 1TD, QB 2 carries for 8 yards, back Up A/C Backs 4 carries for 13 yards... Laser 29 Reach for a TD, 88 SP for a TD, 2 Wedge for a TD, Red Red for a TD... This was a TOUGH Game, we dominated the 2 and 4th quarters both in yards and Time of Possession. The 1st quarter was back and forth as we felt each other out, they controlled the 3rd quarter. They had 17 first downs to our 11 and outgained us in total yards 369 to 292, our kids never got down, just fought tough for 48 minutes. Talk about holding the rope! Proud of em! Brad Knight

HANOVER PARK, IL - HANOVER PARK HURRICANES (80#- Gold Division) 13, Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles- Hurricanes go to 6-0 with a 13-6 defeat of the Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles. Hurricanes rush for over 300 yards but costly penalties and turnovers made the game much closer then it really was. Aaron Thabuteau was the workhorse, pounding Rip 88 Super Power all day. Wingback Andrew "Speed --Racer" provided the knockout punches all day long on 47-C and 29 G-O Reach. The offensive line of Alex Filipovic, Brad Blomgren, Dorian Eddins, Danny Cassidy, Cody McGraw, Daryl Vittal and Jon David Walker pounded the line of scrimmage all day. Kevin Hilliard and Javaun McDonald as always, were the key blockers in making 88 SP sing all day long. Next week is the real test of the season.......Tri City, and we look forward to the challenge. Bill Lawlor

OLYMPIA FIELDS, IL - RICH CENTRAL 32, Rich East 25

BOOTHBAY HARBOR, ME- BOOTHBAY REGIONAL 28, Madison 14 - Seahawks are now 4-0 with a hard fought 28-14 win over Madison. We had 470 total yards Our A-back had 190 yards, B-Back had 110 yards, and C-Back 113 yards. (So much for a "featured back" HW) Plus we had a touch down pass on Red/Red B-screen left. Two interesting points: we give-up a kick-off return for a touch down after our second score - first one in 6 years of squibbing the ball, and we had a 99 yard drive for a TD. This was a tough physical game and one in which we could have scored two more times except for fumbles inside the twenty. Lots for us to work on if we want to get back to the championship game. Jack Tourtillotte

FARMINGTON HILLS, MI - NFWB VARSITY VIKINGS 37 (5-0), Royal Oak Chiefs 0. The streak is finally over- we didn't score on the first play this week, we scored on the third play. We started our second string O and ran 2 Wedge twice before putting in the starting O and hitting the Chiefs with a 65 yard 3 Trap 2 for a TD. I don't have the total yards for the offense yet (I have to get them from the game film as I could not get any parents to keep stats this week) but I suspect it will be up around the 300 yard mark. The offensive line did a great job carrying out their blocking assignments and our A and C backs are finally starting to see where it is we want them to run on the SPs. They had been doing a pretty good job but, they tended to want to go too far to the outside in the previous weeks. I think they've got it now. Our defense was spectacular holding the Chiefs to under 100 yards. The D even intercepted a pass and returned it for an 80 yard TD. Big game next week for us as we travel to Madison Heights to face the other undefeated and unscored on Wolverines. We will see if the Double Wing can put the Vikings in first place. Donnie Hayes

TROY, MI - TROY COWBOYS 32, Shelby Lions-0. We won by the mercy rule of 32-0. We passed only 3 times, but for 59 yards & a TD. Our C back, Dave Pardun, carried 15 times for 225 yds=15 yd avg. A back, Bob D'Alimonte was 4 for !00 & 3TD'S. Our other C back, Todd Terry, had 1 for 72 yds & a TD. It's gotten so every coach in the league can tell when our power play is coming, but they still have to get our guard, tackle & QB out of the way to make the tackle. We have noticed some of the weaker teams trying to run some double wing plays. What do you know? People without prejudice are getting smarter. Take care, mentor. Bill Livingstone

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - BENILDE-ST. MARGARET'S 30, St. Anthony 3 - The Benilde-St.Margaret's Red Knights extended their conference record to 4-0 on Friday by beating St. Anthony 30-3. Senior "A" back Ryan Hibbard continued his torrid rushing and scoring pace gaining 136 yards on 20 carries and 4 touchdowns. In five games Hibbard has 725 yards and has scored 14 touchdowns as the Red Knights double wing offense cranked out another 300 yard game. Six other running backs added to Hibbard's total. The Red Knight double wing is averaging 360 yards and 36 points per game. Also, the BSM defense has not allowed a touchdown in 14 consecutive quarters. Joe Gutilla

ST. CHARLES, MO - ST. CHARLES BUCCANEERS 19, St Louis City Red Rams 0 - The St. Charles Buccaneers started off the season on the right note with a 19-0 victory over St. Louis City Rec Rams. Jake Ksiazkiewicz led the way from his A back spot with 125 yards rushing and 2 TD's. They were scored on a Tight Rip 88 Super Power and a Tight Liz 56-C. B Back Mitch Ratliff also scored on a T 5-X Lead. The defense allowed the Rams only 2 first downs. We spent most of the 4th quarter just running wedges just to keep the clock moving. Steve Fangman

HOPE MILLS, NC - HOPE MILLS FALCONS 18, Hope Mills Steelers 0 - In a game of pure defense dominance the Falcons D allowed one 1st down on a penalty and pushed the Steelers constantly backwards. 3 TDs scored by 3 Different players. Double Wing Confuses them again :) Player of the game: Center Derrik K. 2d game not one bad snap! (Well Coach our 1st year of using the Double wing and BAM! We love it. We have taken a 2-0 lead in our division. Last week, Hope Mills Falcons defeated Hope Mills HeadHunters, the 5 time County Champs, 20-13. It was their 1st loss in a regular season in 6 years. It was not that close. They scored in the final minute when the Our Kids relaxed. Scored 3 of 4 possessions and we stopped them on two long drives in the red zone. Player of the game: Zach P. 101 yds rushing 2 TDs and 1 Sack.)MSG Raymond Knagge

LANSINGBURGH, NY - LANSINGBURGH 58, Watervliet 0 - Marcel Youngs scored five touchdowns to help lead the state's #6-rated team to a win over the #7-rated team. It was Lansingburgh's first win over Watervliet since 1993. Lansingburgh's three starting running backs alone had 450 yards rushing to Watervliet's total of 66. For those who say that the key to stopping the Double-Wing is to stop their "featured back," take your pick: Youngs ran for a 160 yards on 11 carries while Shonte Freeman had 157 yards on 12 carries and Kareem Jones 139 yards on 12 carries. "Lansingburgh has very good athletes, and I don't know how you stop them. That's a very good football team," said Watervliet coach Nick Fitzgerald. "They ran a 7man front and rolled up corners and crabbed their interior guys. our b back did a fabulous job of hopping over crabbers on 6 and 7 g. super powers were there all night and the 29-38 GO reach were incredible. We are now 4-0 and on a a serious roll we have scored 266 points in 4 varsity games and have given up 30. the double wing is great but defense wins championships! Pete Porcelli

Our C back rushed fir 131 yards and 2 TDS on 8 carries, our A back added 65 yards and one TD on 7 carries while our two B backs combined for 95 yards on 2 wedge. QUEENSBURY, NY - QUEENSBURY 34, Gloversville 0-

ROANOKE, VA - CAVE SPRING STAMPEDE 40, Franklin County Blue Devils 14 - Hi Coach.Hope all is well.Yesterday played 5-1 team.By far biggest sized team in area. We were up 12-6 at half time.Came back Red-red then saw they started chasing A back ran qb reverse left.Touchdown 45 yards. That broke them down.Referees started throwing flags for no apparent reason...The other coach protesting wedge...Ball on ten yard line, all to no avail.Season avg 7-0 ,35.6 scored, 6.5 scored against.Pretty soon all the teams in the Roanoke valley will be running the Double Wing.Hope not.Hope they stay with must-run-the-high- school- offense-or-my-favorite-NFL- team's-offense mentality.Regards, Armando Castro

EDMONDS, WA - EDMONDS CYCLONES JUNIORS 46 , Meadowdale Mavericks 0 . Our defense stepped up and created turnovers and gave us the ball deep in their end several times. Our 88 and 99 power as well as 6 and 7G were working well. We worked on our kicking game during the week and kicked two extra points during the game. You don't often see extra points kicked at this level. It's an advantage to us as the kick is worth 2 points. Next week our competition heats up as we play our other Cyclones junior team. We do have the advantage as they don't run the IIWing.

BIRCHWOOD/WEYERHAEUSER, WI- BIRCHWOOD/WEYERHAEUSER 49, Minong Northwood 6

BLOOMER, WI - BLOOMER 18, Ladysmith 7 - Bloomer ranked #4 in DIV 4 played Ladysmith ranked #2 DIV 5, (really only 4 students difference in High School population) for conference lead - both teams were undefeated. Bloomer 18 Ladysmith 7 in a great high school game. Base double wing, stack I and all the variations provided 300 yds rushing against a team who hadn't given up 100 yds so far. Defense held them to 17yds rushing and 7 pts - they'd been averaging 30 per game. Scott Beranek

CHIPPEWA FALLS, WI - CHIPPEWA FALLS 28, River Falls 0

GRANTSBURG, WI- GRANSTBURG 28, Clear Lake 12
